Jan McCullough is the most recent artist to take part in the Belfast Exposed Futures Programme.

Home Instruction Manual is a project that developed from the artist’s interest in the instruction manual as both a concept and an aesthetic. For this new work the artist typed ‘how to make a home’ into Google, and was directed to an online chat forum in which self-described experts were exchanging detailed instructions. She rented a house and carried out the strangers’ advice exactly over the period of two months. The photographs in the series document the end result of her time living and working in the house.

Jan McCullough (b.1991) graduated from the Belfast School of Art in 2013. She recently won the Kassel Fotobook festival Dummy Award 2015, the Genesis Award at FORMAT International Photography Festival and exhibited as part of Reconstructions at Belfast Exposed Photography Gallery (2014) and at the Circulation(s) Festival in Paris (2014).

Belfast Exposed Futures is a programme dedicated to supporting new photographic talent in Northern Ireland. It supports the development and presentation of new work by six early career artists a year in a series of solo shows and aims to promote these artists on an international level by creating significant opportunities for the artists to build their careers.

Belfast Exposed Futures is generously supported by the Foyle Foundation,  Arts Council Northern Ireland and The Directory.
