About The Course

This extensive course is designed for those who are striving to achieve excellence in their field and have a keen interest in pursuing a passion, career or education in photography. The course is also for those who have completed one or more of our ‘Level 3’ photography courses - which focus on specific subjects and styles of photography to allow participants to develop advanced skills, techniques and knowledge, whilst developing their own personal style in the process.

The aim of the ‘Level 4’ course is to help each photographer develop a professional-standard portfolio of work based in their chosen area of photography, and further develop their practice in the process. The course is designed for up to 6 x participants and consists of 10 x 3-hour sessions across a 6-month period (one session every fortnight). Participants on the course will work towards showcasing their artwork in a group exhibition to be on display later in the year.

A broad range of content is delivered throughout the course, providing participants with the skills and knowledge on how to research, plan and prepare a project, and how to take high-quality photographs; to guidance on funding, curating, presenting and how to effectively market your artwork. The course consists of a mixture of group sessions, peer reviews, and individual mentoring, delivered by Belfast Exposed’s team of tutors and professional photographers, and our network of artists and experts in the field. Participants will have bespoke, tailored mentoring through one-to-ones, as each participant will have different needs and goals that need addressed and catered to. We have a team with a range of expertise, which includes everything from film, digital and video, to editing, curating and marketing.

Many past participants of the ‘Level 4’ course have gone on to do undergraduate BA and postgraduate MFA degrees in fine art and photography, while others have successfully started careers in photography.

"I enjoyed the conversation and discussions and appreciate the thoughts, ideas and amazingly extensive knowledge about photography that you share with us, something always piques my interests, or challenges my ideas or thinking." - Neil Jarman (past participant).
