Andrew Rankin – Futures Artist
PORTFOLIO
Andrew Rankin – Futures Artist
Andrew Rankin joined the Belfast Exposed ‘Futures Artists’ programme in 2016 and produced a solo exhibition ‘Close to You’. Since then, Andrew has continued to exhibit his work, been involved with collaborative projects, and works on editorial and commercial projects.
Andrew’s practice is guided by everyday life and how we use escapism within it. He finds it intriguing how escapism often seems to bridge a gap between the real and ideal self, liberating our minds and perceptions of our self for brief periods. He’s interested in how these escapist wanderings aren’t always purely positive and how they can point towards other aspects of life.
The ‘Futures Artists’ programme was a great opportunity for Andrew to further the work ‘Close to You’ and his practice, with the discussions with gallery staff being especially helpful. Through the chance to exhibit at Peckham 24 as well as Belfast Exposed, the ability to develop the work for different spaces and being able to see how the viewing public interacted with the work in each instance was fantastic. Since then, he has exhibited in the Gallery of Photography and been involved in a few collaborative projects, with highlights including Milk Shots (organised by Zoe Hamill) and working with the Junior Press boys (George Voronov and Ellius Grace) on their ‘The Sunless Garden’ event and publication.
Andrew is now currently based in London working on editorial and commercial projects as well as his own practice which seems to involve having fun spinning and breaking plates.
