Jan McCullough – Futures Artist

Jan McCullough joined the Belfast Exposed ‘Futures Artists’ programme in 2015 and produced a solo exhibition ‘Home Instruction Manual‘. Since then, Jan has gained several awards, residencies and exhibitions.

Jan McCullough is a visual artist working with photography and installation. She is interested in the role photography plays in the construction and expression of individual and collective identities in contemporary society. In her work, she explores how people use photography when improving their lives in a consumption-led society, where desires are shaped by advertising and the photographic image – how a ‘better life’ can be commodified to be bought and built.

McCullough’s work has been nominated for the Deutsche Borse Photography Prize, ICP New York Infinity Award and won the British Journal of Photography Breakthrough Award and The Irish Museum of Modern Art Photography Residency Award. Her book ‘Home Instruction Manual’, published by Verlag Kettler, was awarded the Kassel Fotobookfestival Dummy Award and shortlisted for the Recontres D’Arles Author Book Award. Recent installations include Gallery of Photography in Dublin, Seen Fifteen Gallery in London, Unseen Photo Fair in Amsterdam and Landskrona Museum in Sweden. She is currently Artist in Residence at the Irish Museum of Modern Art Dublin and Lightwork New York, and is supported by London-based Freelands Foundation Artists Programme.
