Community

Belfast Exposed’s Community programme is focused on empowering communities through photography as a method for driving and documenting change through social engagement.

A socially-engaged practice, our community programme provides a range of bespoke packages to meet the needs of communities and wider stakeholder groups, showcasing the work to a wider audience and raising awareness. We seek to address post-conflict issues, exclusion, diversity, poverty, unemployment, regeneration, enabling creativity, critical thinking and peace-building.

Community Engagement

Communities are empowered to tell their stories through visual means, articulating their hopes & fears for the future through photography. We also aim to increase access to art and enable creativity with participants in all of our projects.

We deliver hundreds of sessions and work with thousands of people across Northern Ireland. From young people growing up in disadvantaged areas to groups of older people with stories to tell about Belfast’s history. Participants are encouraged to creative narratives about their community, for their community, and highlight the issues that they consider important.

Peace-Building & Reconciliation

Northern Ireland’s history of conflict has left individuals and communities with a legacy of trauma. Belfast Exposed’s programmes support reconciliation, storytelling and healing, allowing participants to share lived experiences. Our work supports peace through community engagement and cross-border collaboration, fostering empathy and amplifying marginalised voices.

We work closely with organisations who specialise in conflict transformation, restorative justice and post-traumatic growth, such as NI Alternatives, Springboard, Girdwood and WAVE Trauma.

The peace-building work of Belfast Exposed has been examined in the recent publication ‘Peace Photography: A Guide’ by Dr Tiffany Fairey and Ingrid Guyon, which offers critical insights into how participatory and community-engaged photography can foster peace, dialogue, and healing.

We encourage individuals, groups and organisations to talk to us to learn more about the programmes we offer.
