Schools & Youth

Belfast Exposed’s Youth programme is designed to support and empower young people to use photography to assist their personal growth, wellbeing, skills training and career development opportunities, including potential accreditation.

Our Youth programme is a photographic school of excellence accessible to both local and international young people aged from five to 25, designed to enhance access to photography through projects and opportunities for young people.

Working closely with education, community and voluntary sectors to establish and develop projects and evaluation processes to help map the participant’s journey, guided and supported by the experienced team at Belfast Exposed.

Belfast Exposed currently offer three programmes for young people – Photography Academy, Young Futures & Summer Schemes – each of which are designed for different ages, purposes and objectives.

Summer Schemes

Every year, Belfast Exposed runs two week-long Summer Schemes in July & August. The Kid’s Summer Scheme for children aged 5 to 11, and the Teen’s Summer Scheme for those aged 12 to 17.

Both Summer Schemes provide a week full of fun, creative and educational activities. This includes a series of excursions and daytrips, as well as time spent at our Belfast City Centre hub. For participants, the schemes are a relaxing and rewarding week of activities, where you will learn and develop your photography skills. They are also perfect for parents & guardians wanting to foster creativity and encourage their children to meet new people.

Young Futures

Belfast Exposed’s Young Futures is for young people aged 15 to 18 who are specifically interested in pursuing a career and/or education involving photography.

The programme teaches participants photographic skills that apply to a range of careers. We cover the technical aspects of both film and digital photography. Participants get the opportunity to experiment with various styles, including portrait, documentary, street, landscape, and studio photography. On top of this, we also cover research and professional skills that will help those wanting to pursue an artistic career and study photography at a higher level.

Participants benefit from our expert facilitators and facilities. This provides opportunities to learn and experiment with new photographic styles, equipment and ideas. We also provide career advice and portfolio development, helping young people build a photographic CV for a potential future career.

Photography Academy

Belfast Exposed’s Photography Academy is unique. It provides groups of young people, aged 15 to 25, with the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge photography, acquire potential accreditation and qualifications, and avail of career advice and an educational support from our team of expertise, all delivered in a safe, creative, and relaxed environment. It is suitable for both complete beginners and also for young photographers looking to develop new skills.

Participants learn technical skills and are introduced to many aspects of photography. These include street, studio, documentary and landscape photography, as well as using the darkroom, photo editing software and much more. With sessions held fortnightly, participants have the chance to meet like-minded young people with an interest in photography, from a whole range of backgrounds.
