About The Event

Belfast Exposed invites you to the exhibition openings of our 3 new exhibitions including Jerwood/Photoworks Award 2020 on Thursday 5th August, 6pm - 9pm during Late Night Art.

"After the success of Belfast Exposed's reopening, it is exciting to work with Photoworks in showcasing Jerwood award winners, Silvia Rosi and Theo Simpson with captivating photographs in relation to the idea of history through their individual photographic practices opens up new avenues for interpretation. In contrast ‘A Conversation Ensued, Nobody Said A Word’, is of a moment and guides us on a journey of artists Colin Darke and Yvonne Kennan feeding off each other to create a narrative of curiosity and wonder.  Balancing both shows is renowned photographer Noel Bowler who in ‘Above The Fold’ gives us access to behind the scenes of press rooms from around the globe making us focus on structures of these dynamic spaces." - Deirdre Robb, Chief Executive, Belfast Exposed

In Gallery 1 we have the opening of Jerwood/Photoworks Awards 2020 which showcases new photographic works by two early-career artists, Silvia Rosi and Theo Simpson. Both awardee artists explore the idea of history through their photographic practices, across themes of family, industry, identity and architecture. The Jerwood/Photoworks Awards support artists using photography to make new work and significantly develop their practice. The awards particularly seek to encourage artists and photographers to explore new approaches to photography, and/or whose practice is experimental.

In Gallery 2, a duo exhibition by Colin Darke and Yvonne Kennan, 'A Conversation Ensued, Nobody Said A Word', opens. The exhibition explores two individual interpreters with pre-existing concerns, interests and concepts considering and replying to the others. The interaction develops, grows, common ground is found, differences are highlighted, fleshed out and analysed, acknowledged, and the conversation continues. Each image is a response to the last, or the many before as the conversation continues, and sometimes pre-empting what is to come.

Our Street View will also be opening with a new exhibition by Noel Bowler featuring his project 'Above The Fold'. Above The Fold is the culmination of an ambitious long-term project (2012-2020) from Irish artist Noel Bowler. Using his signature medium format film camera to photograph newspaper newsrooms across Europe, the United States and Asia, his unique project shows us the physical space and the structural layers that have formed the foundation of our modern press.
