About The Exhibition

A series of images taken by Israeli photographer Ori Gersht, in and around Sarajevo in the aftermath of the Bosnian war. As distinct from much contemporary photojournalism, the images are unsentimental, unemotional and considered, representing not the war but its aftermath. Strangely, they inspire a sense of optimism. Modernist apartment blocks, scarred by shells and bullets, testify to social breakdown, the failure of a system and a collective loss of confidence, yet signal the energy of human ingenuity and the hope of renewal. A gathering together, a switching on of lights.
