Inside Out – New Photography from China

Gallery 1

23rd Jan 2020 to 23rd May 2020

About The Exhibition

Belfast Exposed is delighted to present a co-curated selection of works from 15 renowned photographers, lecturers and students from Luxun Academy of Fine Arts. The exhibition will open on the 23 of January to coincide with the Chinese new year on the 25 January.  ‘Inside Out’ is an exchange programme in partnership with Ulster University (Photographic Department) and Luxun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, China.

The exhibition represents each artist, however as a collective exhibition there is a strong philosophical approach within their practices that unifies the show. The exhibition explores Chinese history, values and identity while reflecting on personal journeys of self-discovery and memory. The natural world has a strong presence with investigations into landscape that encapsulates a sense of place and being. Technology is explored through changes in society and use of photography reflecting on positives and negatives that at times has a focus on a ritualistic process of documentary. Traditions plays a significant role through the use of colour and light, reflecting on Chinese culture as well as providing discourse on how art and image can be interpreted by the audience.

"Belfast Exposed is honoured to host this collaborative exchange programme that has manifested into a wonderful exhibition. Connecting with our sister city in Shenyang opens new possibilities at an international level." - Deirdre Robb, Chief Executive, Belfast Exposed

“Inside Out is a glimpse into the world of Chinese photography, a rare opportunity to see how Chinese artists are responding to issues in Chinese society that broadly correspond with many of the concerns and interests of European photographers; aging, borders, illness, travel, urban development, rural poverty…” - Paul Seawright, Executive Dean, Ulster University
