About The Exhibition
Belfast Exposed is pleased to present the first major solo exhibition of work by Belgian photographer, Geert Goiris in the UK and Ireland.
Geert Goiris can be seen as a contemporary explorer in search of new landscapes and new ways of seeing. Many of his photographs depict remote and unfamiliar places – deserts, polar regions, mountains, forests – in a way that is stark and atmospheric. The work is both documentary – coolly descriptive and without sentiment – and allegorical, in that it draws on the tradition of the pictorial sublime, while at the same time querying it.
Unfathomable is an installation of images which centres on the idea of the abyss, of a deep, immeasurable space. We are presented with a range of scenes including vast and forbidding wildernesses frozen in time, an atmospheric phenomenon which conjures multiple suns, a black hole and a mega-city subsumed in vegetation. Goiris’ photographs are both spectacular and banal, full of incongruous elements and anomalies. They conspire to form a dark, interior world, a bleak and haunting contemporary view.
