Brionglóid, Island Photographers

Description

“Brionglóid” (“Dream” in Irish) was born from a series of themed Instagram Reels created by co-funder Brían Sparks for the Island Photographers account. Inspired by the visual storytelling of these Reels, Island Photographers transformed one of them into their first publication, the start of an ongoing series celebrating contemporary photography from across Ireland.

A total of 41 of Ireland’s most exciting photographers collaborated to bring this dream to life. After many iterations, the final publication was designed with a striking cover by graphic design star Keith Nally and printed in Lithuania by specialist printers Kopa. The result is a lavish 48-page large-format (36 x 25 cm) publication — too sophisticated to be a zine, and not quite a book — hence the artists’ choice to call it a publication.

The goal of Brionglóid is to raise awareness of contemporary Irish photography both within Ireland and internationally.

Island Photographers

This is the first Island Photographers publication. It contains a selection of images from some of the most exciting photographers in Ireland on the theme of “Dream”, or in Irish-Brionglóid.

Formed in 2023, Island Photographers is an artist-led group raising awareness, understand, and engagement with contemporary photography within Ireland. This includes regular talks and special events in which practitioners and other art professionals with an interest in photographic practice can talk about their work and contribute to a broader discussion about photography.
