Description
For this fourteenth edition of Paper Visual Art Journal, we decided to focus on the subject of association football (soccer). The front section of this edition contains essays on the aesthetics of football from the systems of its governance to how the game has been represented on-screen, to the sensations and politics of a kick-around in a park. Thank you to these writers and artists.
We also invited artist Louis Haugh and author June Caldwell to attend a League of Ireland game at Dalymount Park, Dublin, on 25 February this year, where Bohemians FC hosted Dundalk FC in their first home game of the 2022 season. Louis and June were asked to consider this game of football as a public artwork. We’ve placed the resulting photographs and essay parallel to each other as two independent artistic responses.
Thank you to all at Bohemians FC for giving us access to their ground and for their enthusiasm for our proposal in general.
To the rear of this edition, we have six reviews of recent shows in Ireland and abroad. Over the coming months, these reviews will also appear online, adding to PVA’s online archive. Our thanks to all of the reviewers for their time and attention to the exhibitions and works in question. Thanks as always to Atelier Projects also and to the Arts Council whose continued support we appreciate greatly.
Later this year we will publish our next guest-edited book, well I just kind of like it, edited by Wendy Erskine, initiating, with this edition, another run of book, journal, and online publishing that will extend into 2023 and beyond.
