Description

Unseen Ireland – Photographs from the Bell Archive

This is an extensive archive of photographs taken by members of the Bell family in 1950. We believe the primary photographer to be James Kennedy Bell, who was one of four brothers. These 100 extraordinary images are a fraction of the archive taken by the four brothers who were close and shared many interests – photography, science, art, antiques, ornithology and boats.

The photographs capture the beauty of the landscape and the reality of life in rural Ireland, just 30 years after partition and the establishment of the Free State where the mode of transport was the donkey, fuel was turf, most people were barefoot and the language was gaeilge.
