PORTFOLIO
Ruby Wallis – Futures Artist

Ruby Wallis joined the Belfast Exposed ‘Futures Artists’ programme in 2015 and produced a solo exhibition ‘Contact‘. Since then, Ruby has gained several awards, residencies and exhibitions.

Ruby primarily works with photography, installation and the moving image. She often blurs the line between fiction and reality, public and private, drawing on subjective experiences and relationships. She is interested in the use of the close-up and sound to engage an embodied response in the viewer. Recently she has been working with photography and place attempting to subvert empirical modes of surveillance and mapping, using performance and movement, drawing on feminist methodologies to challenge objective, distant framing and imaging of landscape.

At the time of being selected for Belfast Exposed’s ‘Futures Artists’ programme (2015) Wallis had recently completed a practice-based PhD at The National College of Art and Design. The support, mentorship and exhibiting opportunity at Belfast Exposed was key to her career development. Through this, she gained a production residency at The Irish Museum of Modern Art (2016) and exhibited at The Perlman Teaching Museum, Rochester Art Centre USA, Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris (2017) and The Gallery of Photography Dublin (2017). She went on to exhibit for Art of Protest, GIAF, Material Conditions, Platform Arts, Belfast (2018).She was awarded an Irish Arts Council Bursary Award  (2017) and was recently selected for an artist’s residency at Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris (2020). Wallis lectures in visual art and photography at The Burren College of Art and The National University of Ireland, Galway.
