At the Healing Through Photography conference this April, we are honoured to feature David McKinney’s powerful new photographic exhibition, “Seen/Unseen”. Delving into the complexities of mental health decline, McKinney’s work explores the tension of being visible yet invisible—a struggle familiar to many who grapple with inner turmoil and suicidal ideation.
The story behind “Seen/Unseen”
“Seen/Unseen” is a deeply personal exploration of McKinney’s own mental health journey, reflecting on the secrecy and stigma surrounding mental illness. A particularly haunting motif in his work is the CCTV camera, which came to monitor the very spot where his darkest thoughts first took shape. This stark symbol of surveillance underscores the paradox of feeling watched yet profoundly unseen, a sentiment that resonates with those battling hidden emotional pain.
Through his evocative imagery, McKinney invites viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about mental health, encouraging a dialogue about experiences that are often left unspoken. His work challenges the audience to look beyond the surface, urging us to see the silent battles many endure daily.
McKinney’s artistic journey
Born in 1970 and based in Ballymena, David McKinney is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Photography at the University of Ulster. His artistic journey took a significant turn when he discovered the healing potential of photography through Belfast Exposed’s therapeutic photography programme. Reflecting on this transformative experience, McKinney shared, “The act of capturing images helped me break free from the cycles of negative thinking and anxiety that had immobilised me for so long. Each photograph I took became a moment of clarity, an opportunity to step outside my head and into the world around me.”
This newfound creative outlet became a powerful tool for self-expression and recovery, paving the way for his first solo exhibition, Beyond the Tide, in 2024. Supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, this milestone marked McKinney’s emergence as an important voice in therapeutic art. He has also received continued recognition from the SANE Creative Awards Scheme, which supports artists affected by mental ill-health.
From personal experience to visual narrative
McKinney’s artistic style is distinctly experimental, using digital transformations and high-contrast imagery to create abstract pieces. This innovative approach allows him to explore his emotional landscape in a therapeutic and introspective manner. By manipulating his photographs digitally, McKinney uncovers images that resonate with his inner self, transforming personal experience into visual narratives that speak to universal struggles.
An invitation to heal
This exhibition is not just a reflection of McKinney’s personal journey but also an invitation to others to explore the healing power of photography. In giving form to his internal battles, McKinney breaks down the stigma surrounding mental health, fostering meaningful conversations that can help others feel seen and understood.
Experience “Seen/Unseen” at the Healing Through Photography conference
David McKinney’s “Seen/Unseen” is more than an exhibition—it’s an emotional journey that challenges perceptions and sparks dialogue about mental health. It serves as a poignant reminder that even in darkness, there is a possibility for expression, connection, and healing.
David will be giving an Artist Talk on Tuesday 8 April which conference attendees can select as one of their workshop sessions. David will also be participating in a panel as part of the conference where he will discuss his lived experience and recovery.
