We are thrilled to announce that Tiffany Fairey, a leading voice in participatory photography and visual peace research, will be a featured speaker at the upcoming Healing Through Photography Conference, themed Trauma & the Art of Recovery. Tiffany’s recent publication ‘Peace Photography: A Guide’, co-authored with Ingrid Guyon, offers critical insights into how participatory and community-engaged photography can foster peace, dialogue, and healing, with case studies from projects across the globe (including Belfast Exposed).
Trauma-Informed Peace Photography: Learning from practice
In her thought-provoking presentation, Trauma-Informed Peace Photography: Learning from Practice, Tiffany Fairey will explore how photography can be harnessed to support personal and social healing in communities recovering from conflict-related trauma.
Peace photography is an emerging genre that goes beyond documenting conflict—it seeks to represent and contribute to peace. Tiffany’s talk will delve into how therapeutic photography projects with individuals affected by war and violence can operate as forms of peace photography. She will address pressing questions such as: What does a trauma-informed approach to peace photography look like? How can image-making help people rebuild their narratives and forge new connections?
Drawing from her research on Belfast Exposed’s community-engaged mental health projects and The Odyssey Project, a therapeutic photography initiative with combat veterans in the USA, Tiffany will share invaluable insights on the methods and ethics of trauma-informed peace photography. Her presentation will illuminate how this approach enables people to pursue healing and empowerment by using photography as a tool for storytelling and connection.
