Artist Talk: Aneta Grzeszykowska

Join us at Belfast Exposed on Saturday 13th December, from 1:00pm-2:00pm, for an Artist Talk with Aneta Grzeszykowska. This event coincides with the current group exhibition ‘In Her Own Image / Gathering Time / Fotodziennik‘, which showcases Aneta’s photography alongside photographers Zofia Rydet, Anna Beata Bohdziewicz and Teresa Gierzyńska. The exhibitions explore how photography has been used across generations to question identity, memory, and the visibility of women’s lives.

Though their practices differ in method and era, each artist turns the camera into a tool for self-definition, resistance, and storytelling, reclaiming image-making as a way of shaping how women are seen, and how they see themselves. Grzeszykowska, in works such as Album and Selfie, fragments, erases, or reconstructs her image, confronting the fragility of presence and the instability of selfhood in a media-saturated age.

Artist Biography

Aneta Grzeszykowska (b. 1974, Warsaw) is a leading Polish contemporary artist whose practice spans photography, video, sculpture, and installation. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and associated with the Raster generation, she is best known for works that probe identity, memory, and self-erasure using her own body and image. In projects such as Album (2005), she digitally removed herself from family photographs to create a “biography without a protagonist,” while in Selfie (2014) she presented hyper-realistic fragments of her body cast in pigskin, challenging how presence and absence are represented. Her work frequently blurs the boundary between intimacy and the uncanny, raising questions about how women are seen and how the self can be constructed or dismantled through images. Exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale (2022), her works are held in major collections such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw.
