Healing Through Photography

From Isolation to Connection: Stories of Recovery, Resilience and Hope

‘Healing Through Photography’ is a powerful and moving exhibition exploring how photography can support mental health, wellbeing and recovery.

Bringing together the creative work of participants and facilitators from Belfast Exposed’s therapeutic photography programme, the exhibition celebrates the role of photography as a tool for self-expression, reflection and connection.

Through photography, collage, cyanotypes, installation and visual storytelling, visitors are invited on a journey through the many experiences that shape our mental health. The exhibition explores feelings of isolation and disconnection, the impact of negative thoughts and emotional overwhelm, and the gradual process of rebuilding confidence, finding connection and discovering hope.

Quote from the ‘Down the Lens’ Therapeutic Photography programme participant:
“When I came out of hospital, I had many different psychiatrists but felt it very difficult to talk about myself and my mental illness. Belfast Exposed have been a life saver for me and I set aside a day now to meet up with them. We have formed a small group, taking photographs, having a chat and a coffee. This has led to a great improvement in my own mental health, and I can see a way forward for me now.”

At the heart of the exhibition are the voices and stories of participants. Each artwork reflects an individual journey capturing moments of vulnerability, strength, resilience and transformation.

Rather than focusing solely on challenges, the exhibition celebrates the courage, creativity and personal insight that emerge through the process of making and sharing images. Belfast Exposed’s therapeutic photography programme uses a range of creative methodologies to support individuals affected by trauma, mental health challenges, isolation and social exclusion.

The programme provides a safe and supportive environment where people can explore their experiences, express themselves creatively and reconnect with their own stories.

‘Healing Through Photography: From Isolation to Connection – Stories of Recovery, Resilience and Hope’ invites audiences to see photography differently not only as a way of capturing the world around us, but as a means of understanding ourselves. This exhibition is a celebration of the power of creativity, the importance of human connection, and the possibility of recovery and hope.
